Abstract

Summary This paper outlines the aims and method of research used in a survey on urban tree management conducted with nearly 200 local authorities in Britain. It begins by reviewing some earlier and related surveys and then details the aims of the survey in providing, for the first time, a detailed picture of urban tree management throughout Britain. These data can be used in further research to ascertain the degree to which a modern urban forestry approach to urban tree management is applied in practice. An operational definition of urban forestry is given involving the components of planned, systematic and integrated management which are then measured through the selection of indicators or variables.
