A LEED analysis of the clean (112̄0) and (101̄0) nonpolar surfaces of CdS prepared by an ion bombardment−thermal anneal technique reveals: (1) Only integral−order beams are observed with both surfaces. (2) The measured unit mesh dimensions of the surface lattice agrees, to within experimental error (6%), with unit mesh dimensions computed for the undistorted surface. (3) A structure factor intensity analysis based on the C46v space group successfully predicts the missing order beams observed with the (112̄0) surface and the mirror symmetry relative to the c axis of the beam intensities observed with both surfaces. (4) The best estimate for the inner potential is 10±2 V.
