Rate compatible turbo codes

Abstract

Turbo codes can easily be used when two error protection levels are needed. The same encoder and decoder is used to achieve this unequal error protection. This will allow turbo codes to be used for channels where some information bits are more sensitive to errors than others, and at the same time where powerful codes are required (e.g. a mobile satellite channel).
