Poultry litter on which one group of broiler chickens had been grown was treated with superphosphate and phosphoric acid to determine effectiveness of suppression of ammonia release from litter during brooding of chickens using the limited-area brooding concept. Phosphoric acid was effective in controlling ammonia release for the first 10 days of brooding. Superphosphate decreased ammonia release but did not control it. Very little ammonia was released when litter pH was below 7; release was rapid when pH was 8 or above.
