Some highlights of recent research on silane coupling agents are reviewed. Studies of silanes in solution, of chemical bonding in the substrate/matrix interphase, and of the interfacial bond in composites have provided new insights into the mechanism of effectiveness of silane adhesion promoters. Examples are presented of new chemical structures and of new concepts of bonding designed for optimal performance of silane coupling agents in advanced composites.
