Summary Using all the available palaeomagnetic results tentative reconstructions are given for the past positions of various parts of Turkey. At least two parts were located near the equator in Triassic times, presumably along the south-eastern boundary of the Arabian plate. This implies large-scale continental drift towards the north-west which must be taken into account in interpretations of the Alpine orogeny and the geology of the Eastern Mediterranean.
