Abstract The application of Fourier‐transform laser microprobe mass spectrometry to lichens is described. The in situ detection of a new perylene quinone in samples of the tropical species Laurera sanguinaria Malme and Graphis haematites Fée was achieved with minimal specimen preparation. The high mass resolution and mass accuracy of the instrument eliminates the need for additional characterization of the isolated substances by high resolution electron impact mass spectrometry and direct introduction probe.
