The main objective of this study was to develop a two-dimensional theoretical model of a flat-plate solar collector which later could be used for optimizing the configuration parameters based on least cost per unit of energy absorbed. A rational and systematic two-dimensional analysis of a flat-plate solar collector is presented. By means of this model, for any given set of operating conditions, the instantaneous collector performance can be evaluated without having to assume average plate temperature. The results of this model vary significantly from those of the traditional lumped models, which as one should expect, give higher efficiencies in certain flow regimes. This may prove important in choosing physical dimensions of the collector for many applications.
