Specific Leaf Weight Differences in Alfalfa Associated with Variety and Plant Age¹

Abstract

Procedures for determining specific leay weight (SLW = leaf dry weight per unit leaf area) were described. Significant variation in SLW was found both within and among alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.) varieties. Relative SLW ranking of plants was not influenced by stage of maturity. Seedlings classified as high for SLW at the three‐ to six‐trifoliolate leaf stage were also high at the six‐ to 10‐leaf stage and on regrowth after plants had been clipped. The age ✕ variety interaction was not significant. SLW and leaf area appeared to be under independent genetic control. We recommend further investigation of SLW as a selection criterion for increasing yield potential.
