The absorption spectrum of Co(CH 3 COO) 2 ∙4H 2 O has been studied at room temperature and at 78 °K. The cubic field approximation with Dq = 960 cm −1 , B = 850 cm −1 , and C = 4.5B is found to give a good fit to the observed band positions. The spin-forbidden transitions from the quartet ground state to upper doublet levels have been observed, and their intensities and positions are discussed.
