Abstract. This paper examines the advantages to be gained from a probabilistic analysis of learning behaviour, and presents a simple conceptual scheme from which are derived a number of stochastic processes suitable for this purpose. An endeavour is made to clarify the problems of estimation and goodness of fit which arise when such processes arc fitted to experimental data.
