Retention Storage

Retention Storage is a hydrological storage process within the watershed system that refers to the portion of water temporarily detained at the land surface or in shallow subsurface zones, where it is retained against gravitational drainage and subsequently returned to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration, thus distinguishing it from other storage components such as detention or groundwater storage that permit eventual drainage or prolonged retention.
