About

Neurodevelopment is the complex biological process by which the nervous system forms and matures over time, encompassing the cellular and molecular mechanisms that govern the formation, organization, and function of neural circuits. As a research field and academic concept, it investigates the sequential stages from initial neural induction through cellular proliferation, migration, differentiation, axon guidance, synapse formation, pruning, and myelination, spanning prenatal life into postnatal periods. Its significance lies in elucidating the biological basis of cognitive and behavioral capacities, identifying the origins of neurodevelopmental disorders, and informing therapeutic and preventative strategies.
