Methanogenesis

Methanogenesis is a microbial metabolic process within anaerobic environments whereby methanogenic archaea produce methane as a terminal step of anaerobic respiration or fermentation, distinguishing it from other biogeochemical transformations through its exclusive reliance on specific enzyme systems such as methyl-coenzyme M reductase and its central role in closing the carbon cycle in anoxic ecosystems.
