Memetics

Memetics is a theoretical framework and field of study that applies principles from evolutionary biology, particularly those of variation, selection, and transmission, to the analysis of cultural information. It investigates the dynamics of cultural evolution by conceptualizing ideas, behaviors, or styles as 'memes'—units of cultural inheritance that replicate and spread within populations, thereby providing a lens through which to understand the diffusion, persistence, and transformation of cultural phenomena.
