Foundations of Intersectionality
1968 - 1992
The period 1968-1992 witnesses the emergence of intersectionality as a unifying lens that reveals how race, gender, and class interlock to shape oppression and political struggle, rather than operating in isolation. Researchers increasingly abandon universalist narratives, foregrounding transnational perspectives and Black feminist epistemologies while adopting reflexive, feminist methodological approaches that elevate lived experience and collective voice. Economic structures and patriarchy are interpreted as intertwined forces, driving socialist feminist critique and cross-cutting analyses of power that connect race, class, and gender in both study and activism.
• Interlocking systems of oppression across race, gender, and class frame much feminist scholarship, using intersectional analysis to reveal how race and class conditions shape gender oppression and political struggle [4], [13], [15], [9], [17], [14].
• Black feminist thought as epistemology foregrounds knowledge production by African-American women and shapes feminist theory, aligning works such as Black Feminist Thought [17], The Social Construction of Black Feminist Thought [14], Ain't I a Woman [4], and White Women/Black Women [9].
• Feminist sociology and research methodology emerge as central, with consciousness-raising and critique of traditional sociology driving a shift toward feminist methods and perspectives (The Everyday World as Problematic [10]; Breaking Out [7]; Theories of Women's Studies [8]; The Missing Feminist Revolution in Sociology [3]).
• Critiques of capitalism and patriarchy link economic structures to gender oppression, promoting socialist feminist analysis and interlinked class/race dimensions (Capitalist Patriarchy and the Case for Socialist Feminism [6]; Race, Class, and Gender [15]; Women, Race and Class [13]; Labor of Love, Labor of Sorrow [20]).
