Formal Analysis

Formal Analysis is an analytical methodology in architectural criticism and music studies that systematically examines the internal formal structures and constituent elements of works—such as spatial organization, proportion, and material articulation in architecture, or rhythm, melody, harmony, and large-scale form in music—while bracketing external contextual factors in order to explain how their organization produces specific aesthetic and expressive effects.
