Erlang Transit Models is a mathematical modeling framework within transit compartment modeling that generalizes the gamma distribution of residence times by employing a series of identical exponential stages, thereby distinguishing itself from simpler Markovian models through its ability to represent non-exponential, phase-type transit time distributions.
