Electron Counting is a formal bookkeeping methodology in organometallic chemistry that systematically assigns and sums valence electrons from a metal center and its ligands in a coordination or organometallic complex to determine the metal’s valence electron configuration and assess compliance with stability rules such as the 18-electron rule.
