23:T48a,This paper communicates the ethno botanical uses of medicinal plants of Allai valley. Floristically the area is placed in Western Himalayan Province located on the western edge of Himalayas, dominated by Sino-Japanese type of vegetation. Aims of the study were to document the medicinal plant resources and their use patterns. A total of 172 taxa were reported as locally used for various medicinal purposes. Majority of the recipes are prepared in the form of decoction from freshly collected plant parts. Mostly a single species were used and mainly taken orally. They used medicinal plants for asthma, cough, tonic, abdominal pain, and expectorant, anthelmintic, carminative, on boils, snakebites, jaundice, diarrhea and dysentery etc. Among 172 medicinal plants 24 were used for curing livestock. Field observation showed that vegetation of the area was generally threatened due to urbanization, deforestation, over grazing, habitat fragmentation, unscientific extraction of natural vegetation, introduction of the exotic taxa and habitat loss. Measures for the conservation of plant resources especially medicinal plants of Allai valley are urgently needed.24:T4e4,The use of effluents or marginal water in agriculture is an unavoidable practice and its largest source is the urban wastewater. In order to evaluate its effect on agricultural crops, an experiment was conducted to study its impact on Cicer arietinum L. along with different levels of phophorus. Three levels of water used for irrigation included ground water (GW), 50% wastewater (50%WW) and 100% wastewater (100%WW) and the varying levels of phosphorus (P₀, P₂₀, P₄₀, P₆₀) were also applied along with the basal application of nitrogen and potassium at the rate of 15 and 20 kg ha^-1 respectively. The effect was evaluated on the basis of growth, biochemical attributes, photosynthesis and yield of the crop. From the results it was clear that the wastewaters proved not only effective source of water but the nutrients also and enhanced growth and photosynthetic capacity and thereby yield of the plants. Moreover the fertilizer (P) requirement of the crop was also reduced. In conclusion the urban wastewater showed no inhibitory effect on the growth of the crop and thus could effectively supplement not only the nutrient requirement of the crop but may also act as the source of water.25:T4d6,Ocimum gratissimum Linn (Lamiaceae) is an herbaceous plant reputed for many medicinal and agronomic practices amongst Nigerian peasant farmers. O. gratissimum was investigated for antimicrobial activity against ten micro-organisms and for grain protectant activity against Callosobrochus maculatus. The phytocontituents of the aerial part of O. gratissimum were extracted with 95% ethanol using the percolation method. The crude ethanol extracted was further fractionated into hexane, chloroform and methanol fractions. The fractions obtained were screened for phytoconstiteunts, antimicrobial and grain protectant properties. Result showed that hexane fraction exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity against Vibrio cholera and Klebsiella pneumonia. Similarly hexane fraction also showed the highest grain protectant activity. The other extracts of the O. gratissimum did not significantly inhibit both bacterial growth and grain infestation. However, the methanol fraction contains phytocompounds such as phenolic compounds associated with antioxidant properties. The study shows that O. gratissimum extractants are potential sources of antimicrobial and preservative agents.26:T59d,
