Because buses use the same public roads as other forms of transport, the location and design of bus stops involves not only the bus passengers and operating agency, but also other road users and the adjacent residents and businesses. The aim of this study has been to identify the factors to be taken into account when locating and designing bus stops and, whenever possible, to identify the design criteria used in practice. The study is restricted to stops in urban areas and does not refer to terminals with special facilities or bus stations. Among the factors to be considered are smooth operation, operating costs, energy consumption, working conditions of the bus staff, safety, attractiveness, traffic flow and environment. The results of a survey of cities in a number of nations are summarized.
