This article summarizes findings of a study to identify critical transportation needs following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Response actions are documented, and the strengths and weaknesses of transportation-related operations undertaken are addressed. Recommendations are presented to enhance the preparedness of response agencies in management of the local and regional transportation system in the aftermath of such catastrophic events.
