Abstract

Corrosion is an electrochemical process. The resistivity of concrete can be measured to estimate the rate of corrosion. The electrical resistivity of concrete is dependent on the capillary pore size, pore system complexity, moisture content and concrete quality. This current practice sheet describes the equipment used for measuring concrete resistivity, measurements and calculations, data interpretation, the limitations and possible causes of error associated with resistivity measurement, and the training of personnel carrying out resistivity measurements. Guidelines are presented on procedure and on the electrode spacing and location to minimise errors.
