Nationally and internationally, it can be said that deaths and injuries from accidents on the highway have now reached epidemic proportions. In the whole world, it is estimated that over 200,000 deaths and over 10 million injuries occur as a result of road accidents every year. This study, which focuses on fatalities from traffic accidents in Europe and the U.S., was undertaken to compare demographic and accident characteristics between the two continents. The Western European countries included in the study are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland.
