A study is reported which evaluated the performance and durability aspects of the superstructure of the Bissel Bridge (constructed in 1957 over the Connecticut River), prior to its planned demolition. It is a cast-in-place, prestressed, post-tenioned structure incorporating a number of construction innovations and unique details. The article describes the bridge and the inspection procedures. Tendon defects are described, as well as the superstructure components. Novel aspects of the construction are noted. Conclusions reached regarding the extensive longitudinal cracking and its causes are listed.
