Abstract

Roll stabilisation or reduction is to minimise the largest annular excursion of roll when a ship is subjected to wave disturbance. This is necessary to improve the comfort of personnel and the working efficiency of the crew on board. In ships which carry helicopters or vertical take-off and landing aircrafts, roll reduction enables the ship to operate in a more severe sea condition before the roll motion is excessive for the safe landing, taking-off and handling of these aircrafts.
