Abstract

This study presents a framework of incorporating constraints on the choice set, such as time and monetary budgets, into discrete binary travel choice models. A term called inclusion is used to represent the probability that a particular alternative is in a decision maker's choice set. This term makes possible the extension of the ordinary binary models to include various types of constraints that influence travel choice behavior. Numerical examples are presented in the paper to illustrate the general properties of the constrained choice models and to compare them to those of the conventional unconstrained models. Using data generated by Monte Carlo simulation, the feasibility and practicality of estimating the model coefficients by the maximum likelihood method are investigated. (Author/TRRL)
