Laterite as a term has been applied indiscriminately in tropical highway engineering to any soil displaying a red coloration. Concretionary laterite is widely used as a sub-base and base material for gravel roads but, owing to confusion of terminology, the application of lateritic materials is frequently misunderstood. This handbook is intended to assist engineers working with lateritic materials. A classification scheme for the field description of potentially useful concretionary laterites is provided. Effective field prospecting for laterite is explained. The several specifications current in tropical countries for the use of natural gravels in road pavements, as well as those that have been specifically applied to lateritic gravel, are compared, as are the practices of stabilisation for their relevance to concretionary laterites. Criteria are given to judge the suitability of lateritic gravels for use as sub-base and base materials and for unpaved roads.
