Information on traffic accidents at bridge sites suggests a potential safety problem and the need for more detailed data on the problem. In the early 1970's, bridge-related accidents in the States of Virginia and Kentucky, for example, not only constituted a high percentage of all accidents, but also accounted for a disproportionate number of fatalities and injuries. Bridge-related accidents were found to be approximately twice as likely to result in fatality as a typical accident. A research study sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) examined the extent and nature of the narrow bridge accident problem. This article presents selected major findings and recommendations from this study.
