Abstract

The rate of volume self diffusion in metallic systems appears to be predictable by the formula D = Do x e/sup -/(Ko + V)(Tm/T)where Do is a universal constant about equal to 1 cm/sup 2/su/sec, Tm is the absolute melting tem erature, T is the absolute temperature of diffusion, V is the valence of the metal, and Ko is a crystal structure factor (14 for BCC metals, 17 for FCC and HCP metals, and 21 for diamond-structure type metals). Theoretical implications of this empirical equation for diffusion are discussed, (auth)
