Advantages of the use of plant seeds as a system for radiobiological research are pointed out. Techniques for experimental control of oxygen, water, and temperature before, during, and after seed irradiation are summarized. Results of studies of the effects of these environmental factors on genetic damage in plant tissues are reviewed. Evidence that under certain treatment condftions the induction of chromosome aberrations and mutations may not be correlated effects is presented. It is concluded that present knowledge of tue interrelation of oxygen, water, and temperature in production of radiation damage in seeds permits considerable control over the biological effects of radiation.
