Abstract After discussing the principle of optical equivalence of stressed isotropic bodies, the author deals respectively with current methods to determine (P − Q); the fringe method; annealing of bakelite; fringe photographs of various models; membrane method to determine (P + Q); the photoelastic investigation of stress distribution in square plates subjected to diagonal compression; isoclinics; trajectories; (P − Q) from fringe method; P and Q by graphical integration. He then summarizes the approximate theoretical analysis by the strain-energy method, gives comparative curves, discusses results, describes new equipment, and in conclusion, derives fundamental equations for the evaluation of P and Q by graphical integration.
