Abstract

In this paper, a comparative study was conducted on the undrained monotonic and cyclic behavior of calcareous sand and siliceous sand using a series of simple shear tests. To more effectively draw the comparison, the same grain-size distribution was employed for calcareous sand and siliceous sand to study any underlying liquefaction behavior divergence arising from their respective distinctive particle characteristics. The results suggested that calcareous sand exhibited higher peak strengths, stability and liquefaction resistance than siliceous sand. Furthermore, the peak strength from monotonic shear tests could serve as a vital index to assess the liquefaction resistance of the sand.
