Abstract

Is glucose, fructose or mannose fermented anaerobically with yeast in H 2 O/HOT, the ethanol formed shows 30% tritium in the methyl group, 48-54% in the 1-R-position (HNAD) and 44-52% in the 1-S-position (H Dec )· The tritium content per gram atom hydrogen of the water is assumed to be 100 per cent. As the fermentation proceeds the tritium label in the 1-R-position increases. From glucose-1-T 30% and from glucose-6-T 24% of the tritium do not appeare in the ethanol formed.. 20% of the tritium label from glucose-2-T are incorporated into the methyl group of ethanol. Using glucose-1- 14 C and glucose-6- 14 C the pentose cycle was determined to be 9,7 per cent. This is in good agreement with the figure obtained with glucose-3-T. Glucose-1-T-6-phosphate is discriminated in the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase reaction against the nonlabeled material.
