The thermal runaway disaster suppression technology for lithium-ion battery (LIB) based on external prevention and control strategy remains confronted with myriads of challenges. Utilizing the self-built experimental platform, this paper studied the potency of nitrogen (N2) twin-fluid liquid perfluorohexanone (C6F12O) mist technology (N2-twin-fluid C6F12O mist) in suppressing LIB fires and of nitrogen (N2) twin-fluid water mist technology (N2-twin-fluid H2O mist) in cooling the surface of LIB. The results showed the potency of N2-twin-C6F12O mist in suppressing and extinguishing battery surface fire boosted by 51.2% compared with when N2 was used alone; the N2-twin-H2O mist synergistic technology could effectively suppress the rekindling of LIB while increasing the cooling rate of battery surface by above 20%. Synergistic cooling effect is dependent on the spraying rate and application time: the greater the spraying rate and the longer the application time, the more beneficial for batter surface cooling. Although the N2 twin-fluid liquid mist synergistic technology could effectively suppress the carbon monoxide (CO) produced in the thermal runaway process, it could significantly promote the generation of toxic gas hydrogen fluoride (HF). The research conclusion provides a guidance for exploring the application of inert gas twin-fluid liquid mist technology in suppressing disasters caused by thermal runaway of LIB.
