Abstract

the International Congress on the Education of the Deaf (ICED) issued a statement to address events that occurred at the 1880 Milan ICED conference, which determined that the pure oral approach was the preferred method of instruction for children who are deaf.According to ICED, "This statement, 'A New Era: Deaf Participation and Collaboration,' was introduced to Congress participants as the beginning of a dialogue to promote healing and set the path for future collaboration."In part, the statement "calls upon all nations to ensure that educational programs for the Deaf accept and respect all languages and all forms of communication."For over 110 years, The Volta Review has been committed to the advancement of rigorous research exploring best practices in education, literacy development, language development, and family support of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.Since Alexander Graham Bell first published the journal, editors and contributors have dedicated its contents to exploring the methods, strategies, and technologies that make listening and spoken language a viable option for individuals with hearing loss.It is this dedication to providing information that encourages ongoing discussion about communication approaches, and enables professionals to have a comprehensive catalog of information with which to counsel parents on the language options available for their child. It is our hope that an ongoing dialogue will be aided by the information published in these pages. To that end, we would like to encourage practitioners, clinicians, academics, and educators to consider developing a manuscript for publication.Rigorous research, literature reviews, commentaries, and case studies all serve an important role in building a strong canon of information about listening and spoken language.By contributing to this body of research, you can be assured you will be aiding new parents of children with hearing loss in choosing the right communication option for them.If you're not sure where to begin, visit The Volta Review website at www.agbell.org/TheVoltaReview.We have created a 4 large number of documents that will walk you through creating a rigorous research project and help you develop interesting data and facts into a viable manuscript. We hope you enjoy this issue, which provides fascinating research on mothers of children with hearing loss, reading instruction, and standardized research analysis tools. And please don't hesitate to contribute to The Volta Review .
