Abstract

The rectangular parallelepiped resonance (RPR) method is successfully applied to determine the elastic constants of single crystal garnets as small as 5×10-3cm3. The elastic constants (in Mbars) of two specimens of almandine-pyrope varieties are; C11=3.045±0.006, C12=1.099±0.007 and C44=0.954±0.001 for a specimen from Arizona and C11=3.002±0.005, C12=1.082±0.006 and C44=0.946±0.001 for a specimen from Tanzania. The elastic conlstants of garnets in the almandine-pyrope system do not depend much on the ratio Fe/Mg. By combining the present data with those of the others, the elastic constants of natural almandine-pyrope garnet are given as; K=1.75±0.02, Cs=(C11-C12)/2=0.968±0.010 and C44=0.943± 0.016 in Mbar.
