(Abstracted from Anesth Analg, 122:1646–1653, 2016) Patients undergoing multilevel deformity-correction spine surgery may experience substantial inflammatory, muscular, neuropathic, and postsurgical pain, which increases chronic opioid use and incidence of opioid-related complications. Previous studies have shown α2 agonists to have an opioid-sparing effect in certain types of spine surgery.
