Medical readers, who demand much of those few books they choose to study for hours, will celebrate William Paul and this excellent exposition of modern immunology. Other book editors should look here to see how to do the job. Among all our colleagues, young and old, from all specialties, not many are able to teach up-to-date immunology. Most need to study—carefully, at leisure—from a book. This is the excellent book they need. To consider the best features of Paul's new edition: the authors are authoritative, and the presentations (writing and diagrams) are concise, understandable, and complete. Unlike most recent texts, this one has a satisfactory index. The bibliography is long, unusually well selected, and up-to-date on 1988 publications. For me, nothing in the book is so useful as a clever summary of all parts of the text presented as the first chapter and the key-concept lists at the top of
