The Structure of Sunspot Umbras. I. Observations.

Abstract

High-definition photographs of a sunspot obtained by Stratoscope I show that the umbra is resolved into many tiny bright dots. These dots have diameters of 300 km or less. Their lifetime is of the order of 2' hour.
