Concentrations of metals in the New York City Harbor are as much as 150 times greater than those in the ocean. Analyses were carried out for Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd as well as seven other elements on influents, effluents and sludges at the city's 12 major plants. The electroplating industry is a contributor; however, considerably larger quantities of metals are added by other sources, such as domestic and private resources. A reassessment of the sources of metals in the environment is recommended. (ND)
