Sulphidic tailings can react with water and oxygen and induce an acidic leachate. Covers with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) can be used to limit the flow of oxygen from the atmosphere to the reactive tailings and hence control the production of acid mine drainage (AMD). The effective diffusion coefficient De and the reaction (consumption) rate coefficient Kr are the controlling parameters for evaluating oxygen flux. In this paper, the authors present an experimental procedure to determine these parameters based on the temporal evolution of oxygen concentration during in situ testing. The actual values for De and Kr are simultaneously obtained by comparing the measured concentration profile in a close reservoir with the one obtained from a numerical treatment of modified Fick’s laws. Preliminary results obtained with the proposed method are presented; more field results are given in a companion paper (this conference).
