Regarding continuous demand of higher voltage levels, modular multilevel converter (MMC) and cascaded h-bridge (CHB) converter are becoming the preferred topologies for medium-voltage drive application thanks to their modular structure. To select between these topologies, reliability is from the most important factors. This paper provides a comparative and quantitative analyze on MMC-based and CHB-based drive systems. Reliability model of these converters are extracted in no-redundancy, cold-redundancy, and hot-redundancy conditions. Then, several case studies are considered and reliability and expected lifetime of these systems are compared. Simulation results in various conditions demonstrate the more reliable system and more effective redundancy strategy in these drives.
