Abstract

The solubility qf nitrogen and the equilibrium of tlte titanium nitride forming renction in liquid Fe-Ti aI/oJ's under tit, presence and absence of titanium nitride were studied by Ihe sampling method at 1 600, 1 650 and 1 700C in the concentration range of 0 to 0.5";0 Ti . Solubility of nitrogen markedly increased with illcreasing titallillm cOllcentration , and titanium nitride was precipitated at very low concentrntioll of titanium ill the liquid Fe-Ti alloys. From tlte ex/;erimental data, the interaction parameter, e~TIJ and e. tI;) were detennined for each temperature. The titanium nitride precip itated in the liquid Fe-Ti-N ~yslem was identified as stoichiometric TiN by X-ray diffraction analysis, alld the stalldard free energy of decomposition of TiN was determined as T iN(s) = Ii + ~ LiCO = 90400 -35.
