Highly regio- and stereodefined products are obtained from the cycloaddition of benzocyclobutenes with aldehydes and imines (see scheme). These high-yielding thermal reactions can be performed in the absence of catalysis—even at ambient temperature. Y=H, OMe; X=NR′, O; TBS=tert-butyldimethylsilyl.
