This report summarises the findings of the Confidential Inquiry into premature deaths of people with learning disabilities. The study was commissioned by the Department of Health (England), and reviewed the deaths of 247 adults and children with learning disabilities drawn from five (former) Primary Care Trusts over a two-year period. In addition, the deaths of 58 comparator cases (people without learning disabilities) were reviewed to place the findings pertaining to people with learning disabilities in context. <br/>The study found that people with learning disabilities died significantly earlier than people in the general population, and that the contributory factors associated with their deaths were more likely to be amenable by good quality healthcare. A set of 18 recommendations are made.
