The photo-absorption and the magneto-optic properties of Sm 2+ in CaF 2 type crystals have been calculated and compared with experiments. It is shown that, in the excited states of 4 f 5 5 d configuration, the total spin S = S d + S f and a composite angular momentum J = S + L f are good quantum number. A selection rule characteristic for this coupling scheme is given. Precise values of all the important interactions are determined.
