An inverse identification of material parameters has the potential to increase the quality of Finite Element-simulations in metal cutting. Since basic data for the calculations are measured under the thermomechanical load in a cutting situation, extrapolation errors can be reduced. Difficulties arise from the determination of the mechanical load inside the material during chip formation. Most methods use a chip-root-analysis, which is a post-process procedure. This paper presents a newly developed inverse method, applying optical measurements analyzed with a Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. In this way the shear strain rate is determined at cutting speeds and load conditions significant for industrial applications.
