The effects and benefits of π stacking in asymmetric synthesis is reviewed. Specifically, asymmetric induction achieved with chiral auxiliaries and chiral catalysts can be enhanced by π stacking effects, locking one confirmation of a reactant preferentially in a given transition state assembly. The evolution of such systems, their application in synthesis, together with related developments in the field of molecular recognition will be highlighted.
