Abstract

Physical education provides a unique opportunity to impact on a student's  self-esteem. Unfortunately, methods employed by many physical educators in the gymnasium are often counterproductive to accomplishing this goal. Since  selfesteem is developed mainly through engaging in appropriate behaviors and  accepting true challenges physical educators must develop programs with these concepts in mind. Physical educators must provide individualized, safe,  disciplined, and challenging environments. The ability to group students appropriately and create a competitive, yet cooperative, environment is critical. Suggestions as to how to accomplish physical educators can most effectively accomplish these goals is the focus ofthis paper.
